A Tribute to Black Excellence: EGOT Winner Viola Davis
As a Black woman, I am always in awe of those who have paved the way for our

One such figure is the multi-talented Viola Davis, who recently made history as the first Black woman to become an EGOT winner. This incredible feat is unprecedented and will surely be acknowledged for decades.

In this post, I want to celebrate Viola; not just for her incredible achievements in the entertainment industry but also for her fashion statements and how it pays homage to Black American culture and Black excellence.

Viola Davis is not just a talented actress but also a style icon who continuously inspires us with her elegant and sophisticated fashion choices. From red-carpet events to awards shows, she never fails to stun us with her impeccable sense of style. Whether it's a glamorous gown or a simple yet chic outfit, she knows how to make a statement and command attention.

Viola definitely stole the show at the 2018 Oscars with her gorgeous hot pink gown from Michael Kors. The cut of the dress was simple yet stylish, and the bright pink hue was eye-catching. Viola completed the incredible look with her dazzling diamond accessories and retro-inspired hair and without a doubt, her whole outfit was one of the best ones of the night.

Likewise, though she may be able to rock any gown she puts on, she doesn’t shy away from pantsuits. Oversized or tailored, Viola wears each one beautifully and is just as sartorially commanding. On the left, Viola attends the Vanity Fair party wearing a sleek and so chic white suit by Brandon Maxwell while pairing it with her Oscar and the captivating factor: fun platform sneakers from Stella McCartney.

On the right, she is dressed in a double-breasted Alexander McQueen suit in vibrant green. She is known for solid color dressing so she pairs it with a green clutch and striking pointed-toe pumps with fierce metal tips.

What sets Viola apart is her understanding of the power of fashion and how it can be used to tell a story and pay tribute to Black American history and culture. She often incorporates traditional African prints, fabrics, and designs into her looks, bringing a unique and meaningful touch to her outfits. With this, she not only celebrates her heritage but also shines a light on the beauty and richness of Black excellence.

For the virtual 2021 Golden Globe Awards, for example, Viola made an everlasting and powerful statement by wearing a gorgeous custom gown by Lavie by CK inspired by Claude’s Cameroonian roots. Not only did she celebrate her affinity for bold color and style, most importantly, Viola paid homage to the innovative creativity of Black fashion designers and the beauty and uniqueness of African culture. She also used her immense popularity and platform to bring awareness once again to the cultural divisions in the entertainment and fashion industry, especially on the red carpet.
Her stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, mused:

“Her look is all about rethinking glamour and couture on the red carpet in the age of diversity and inclusivity. It’s still an arena that needs cultural specificity. Claude Kameni’s latest collection [from her brand Lavie by CK] was inspired by African royalty, and Viola is royalty to me!”

Her style also reflects her unwavering confidence and unapologetic attitude, which is so crucial for Black women. She never shies away from taking risks and experimenting with different styles and trends. This fearless approach to fashion is a reminder for us to embrace our individuality and never be afraid to stand out.

In conclusion, Viola Davis is more than just an EGOT winner. She's a role model, a trailblazer, and a fashion icon who continues to inspire us with her talent, grace, and style. Every time she steps out in a new look, she not only makes a fashion statement but also celebrates and honors Black American history and culture. And for that, I am grateful.
