National Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15 each year since its month-long inception into society in 1988. Originally, Rep. Edward R. Roybal of Los Angeles sponsored the legislation in 1968 and President Johnson signed Hispanic Heritage Week into law, establishing a commemorative week for the Hispanic American community to celebrate their hefty contributions. Two decades later, President Reagan rightfully lengthened the week to a month thanks to sponsorship from Rep. Esteban Edward Torres and an amendment from Senator Paul Simon.
The start date of September 15 was chosen to honor the anniversary of the Cry of Dolores, which marked the start of the Mexican War of Independence. The New Spain Colony (which was made up of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua) gained independence from Spain in 1821. Today, Mexico, Chile, and most Central American countries celebrate the start of their liberation on September 15, 16, and 18, respectively.

Like most women, founder Angelina Marie schlepped her numerous essentials daily in her work bag. With the multiple work shoes to carry, she wanted to create a way to effectively tuck them into her bag, so TAH (“Tote-a-Heel”) Bags was born out of necessity.
Each piece of Angelina’s collection is made from quality, full-grain leather, and solid brass hardware. They’re handcrafted in the leather capital of Leon, Mexico at a superb, multi-generational family-run business known for its expertise in leather goods.
Angelina is a proud Hispanic-American businesswoman and she shared with us that she got her initiation into the fashion world from her sweet mom and how she inspired her.
"She loved style and fashion. I grew up thrifting with my mom; she knew all the quality labels and what to look for. I learned that quality was worth the time and effort. She enjoyed reading Vogue. She always wore red lipstick and had her nails painted red. That inspired the red lining I use in all of my bags."
Her family's imprint on her life has extended far beyond memorable family dinners every weekend or banding together through rough moments.
"My grandmother made clothing for her kids and grandkids. Fashion has been a part of my family for a while. My dad also helped me design my first prototype using cardboard and tape. I didn’t have a lot of money to spend on tech packs etc., so we found a clever way to make it happen."
What National Hispanic Heritage Month and her Hispanic roots mean to her:
"My Hispanic heritage means family, hard work, music, and good food. In fashion, it means true quality, red lips, and fashion magazines."
